ABOUT OUR SHORT COURSE
UWC Mostar's short course 'Peace by Piece' aims to build an understanding of conflict and resolution and to inspire active engagement within one's community.
This programme aims to:
-
Develop recognition and appreciation of differences among people
-
Build an understanding of the causes and effects of conflict and approaches towards resolution
-
Motivate change within oneself and action within one’s community
-
Encourage personal challenge
-
Form a community based on mutual understanding and responsibility
These goals encompass both participants and facilitators , as we believe it is a learning experience for everybody involved. Our program is inspired by the UWC values and will reflect those during the activities and discussions held.
AN 'EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING' APPROACH
This course will bring together a diverse group of young people from various social and cultural backgrounds, to live together in an environment that requires mutual responsibility and openness. During the course participants will acquire and develop skills through experiential educational activities, where they will be challenged to take on active leading roles, learn how to communicate inter-culturally and work in cooperation with others. Our approach to activities is one that encourages learning through engagement, action and reflection, rather than observation. This approach is largely inspired by CISV.
OUR ACTIVITIES
There will be various focuses to our activities from activities relating more to our theme, to ones that work on building skills, such as, communication and teamwork. And finally, to ones that focus on encouraging the applcation of the skills and knowledge acquired during the course through projects within ones own community.
A component of the short course includes the cooperation with service activities at UWC Mostar (service CASs) that engage with the local community and will helps students understand and relate to local issues on a more individual level. Finally, there will also be various cultural activities that aim to develope self-awareness and respect to cultural differences and similarities.
DATES
The Short Course will take place from the August 3rd until August 15th, 2014 for all participants, the organizers and facilitators will arrive on August 1st for preparation.
